Day One Travel & Arrival at Carlsbad Seapointe Resort

For me, the trip begins with a few flights. One from Virginia to Chicago then on to San Diego. The round-trip tickets were cheap for some reason. Before fees, the ticket was $330 for the coach. The only way I can do coach is by being on the emergency aisle for legroom but when available I make it happen.

Well, I got the emergency aisle seat on the way to Chicago but from there to San Diego I was in a regular coach seat. Now I am a huge guy but I still fit my lower half into a regular seat. My arms and chest don’t but I can make it into those seats. The problem is leg room and having to keep my arms across my chest if someone is next to me for the entire flight. Luckily on the way over a stewardess moved me to a first-class seat. This meant I could breathe.

The number one most important travel tip be nice to people. Really nice. Even when things are going south or you are not happy be nice. You can ask for things even but be very nice about it. I did not ask for an upgrade on this flight. I did ask if there was a seat in the emergency row but only after thanking her for her kindness, and for providing an appropriate complement. On her next pass by I politely asked about the emergency row. She came back 5 minutes later and instead moved me to first class.

Be the light in someone’s day. Make them smile you will have a shot at making someone else happy, and that alone may make you feel better on a tough day.

The San Diego and surrounding Carlsbad area has some of the best weather in the World. The year-round daily average high temp in the winter is 66 and in summer it is 77. The entire area seems like it has air conditioning. If it was not for the taxes, politics, and earthquakes I would consider moving here. It is an amazing area to visit and enjoy for a vacation. Nearly, dreamlike conditions for the weather.

Once we landed I made my way to the baggage to collect my bag. I had to check one since this was not just a weekend trip but instead the first of several resorts I would be staying at for almost 2 weeks in the area. Luckily, the bus to the rental car building was right outside and it was a seamless effort to get to my rental car and be on my way.

The resort is only about 39 minutes up I5 from the airport so it is super easy to find and reach. Given my flight time, I made it just 15 minutes or so before check-in. So, I went a few minutes early playing ignorant about the time and smiling a lot.

They had my room ready and were nice not saying anything about the check-in time difference. Some places lose their minds over that. I figure if I ask nicely it might take 15 minutes to get me sorted anyway. With the flight and all if possible I wanted to put my bags into my room shower, change and then get some dinner.

Day Two The Beach

Since this resort is likely the closest to the beach I will stay at on this trip today I plan to spend most of the day on the beach. California beaches are different from east coast beaches for sure, but with the near-perfect outdoor temperature, the package together is hard to improve upon.

I spent the day with my feet in the sand only leaving to put my feet in the water, for a necessary trip, or for a drink refill. It was a great day.

I am not a surfer and they likely do not make a longboard that would carry me these days. But if you like surfing the water here is good for it, and there are many surfing classes you can take, or you can sign the kids up for. Just be aware that the feeling of surfing can be addicting.

The ocean on the west coast feels somehow wilder maybe because I am so used to either the east coast or the Gulf of Mexico. I have been in the area before and even scuba-dived on the west coast and it is amazing in California.

The beach area here is not as wide as some other beaches I have been to recently. But it is nice and the setup thanks to the resort makes it convenient. There are 3 roads that you walk across from the resort to get onto the beach. They have nice crosswalks but you do need to keep your eyes open and aware.

It is maybe a 2 block walk or so in total which is not bad. The beach has public parking right in front too if you have a ton of items you take them to the beach with the family. Since it does have that good public parking expect nonresort guests as well during your visit. The time of year will determine the number of people on the beach.

South Carlsbad State Park is also here with all of the RV and camping sites too. This is neat if you are a people person or enjoy people-watching I guess. North Ponto Beach is the area directly in front of the resort on the ocean and it is a nice but popular spot.

Day Three Local Adventures

Legoland

It is hard to write about this resort to not speak about Legoland. If you are coming with family or an adult Lego fan this theme park will be a must for you. It is within walking distance of the next resort I will be staying at Grand Pacific Palisades Resort which is a part of the same group of resorts as this location. Legoland is by any measure a full-sized theme park at a grand scale. They do a hard push for staying at the theme park hotels on the website but there are many resorts like this one all around the park to choose from. All of the resorts I am staying at this week are very close to Legoland. The site offers a Legoland waterpark, main park, movie world, and aquarium so there is much to see and do at the site.

I think all parks are for kids of all ages but Legoland really does feel geared to the younger kids which I am sure is nice for young families.

Local Artists

For myself, I was not headed to the park today but instead on to the Oceanside Art Gallery. I paint some myself so seeing this local art was something that has value for me specifically. If you like to collect art finding local artists’ work that moves you in smaller galleries as you travel is a great way to remember your trips.

When I had no money beyond what I was spending on vacations I would return with a shell or a rock from a trip. Now I sometimes return with some local art, and if I flew I have it shipped to my home.

I live in a small simple home but it is filled with art. Most of it is mine or one of two local artists I enjoy, but I also have paintings from artists that caught my eye on vacations.

On this trip, I found a painting by local artist Holly Wolfe that caught my eye. Something about the way she painted her building struck me as fun and lighthearted. Her art seemed to be captured through a misty fog or as if looking through an old lead glass window. I liked that look.

Follow me on my next local adventure and make sure to book this resort on TZort to stay by the ocean.
